Our aim, our raison d'ętre, is to play a part in bridging the gaps in a
shrinking globe. We hope our books open the hearts and broaden the perspectives
of those who read them for they deal with the human condition in very different
parts of the world.
In the past 100 years in the United States we have evolved from a loose system
of folk medicine and apprenticeship-trained doctors with little scientific
backing to their cures, to the world’s most sophisticated medical system
centered on technical advances. Yet many patients and doctors sense that we have
lost the human side to medicine in our quest for scientific miracles. We are
facing a crisis in medicine that goes beyond rising health care costs and the
uninsured.
At a time when the possibilities for cure or relief from illness by technical
intervention are evolving daily, disappointment and mistrust of the medical
profession is at an all-time high. Patients feel isolated while doctors feel
pressure from the medical industry to minimize nonprocedural contact with
patients.
These tensions affect people at their most vulnerable time of life -- when they
are sick or injured and need help. The paradigm of professional medicine is
shifting from one of trust and integrity to an uncertain mix of high-tech
medicine, market share, efficiency and profit, with no consensus on ethical
guidelines, and uncertain measures of consequences.
While the news media is rife with negative accounts of the medical industry in
the United States, there are positive stories to be told that show trustful and
mutually beneficial relationships between patients and doctors.
The stories in Bill Close’s books give hope to patients and medical
professionals that technical excellence and compassionate care are still
compatible realities within professions that seek to comfort and sometimes cure.
Our latest book, Beyond the Storm: Treating the Powerless and the Powerful in Mobutu's
Congo/Zaire will be available through Amazon, Barnes
and Noble, and other books stores including our web site where all of Dr. Close's books
can be ordered and signed by the author.
